Election 2016: A Clear Distinction

jeff-coorsGuest essay by Jeff Coors

This presidential election is critical. The next President of the United States could appoint at least three Justices to the Supreme Court of the United States—setting a course for America for the next 30 to 40 years. The fate of the unborn, our religious freedoms, and our nation’s support for Israel are all at stake this election. We may have reasons to dislike the candidates, but one of two will be our next President.

We must pray that the Church will understand the importance of this presidential election, discern which party stands stronger for God’s values, and encourage Christians to vote. In pride we could say, “I didn’t vote for either,” abdicating the future direction of our country to others. Some say, “God is in control,” to justify passivity. They accept the rise of evil, seeing it as inevitable prior to the return of Christ. Paul anticipated Jesus’ return, yet he pressed on to spread the Gospel and righteousness. If God’s people didn’t resist evil through the centuries, we would still be enslaved to tyranny and suffering. Sitting out this election is agreeing to turn over our nation and children to the enemy. Pray this won’t happen.

The Apostle Paul, early Church leaders, our Founding Fathers, and countless Americans through the generations understood that God is in control through His Spirit in us. He does little without the prayers and active engagement of His people. Our God doesn’t advocate passivity, but bold action to transform our culture for righteousness. Voting is bold action and obedience at this time.

I challenge Christians to read the party platforms as they pray for whom God would have them vote. There has never been a clearer distinction between party’s official platforms. While candidates are not bound to the platforms, these provide the guidance for them based on the input of their members. Christians have a moral obligation to both pray for those in authority and to vote for those who govern us. IFA has available a 2016 Presidential Election Voter Prayer Guide that provides the platform positions and Scriptures connected with each issue that will assist you as you pray and seek the Lord for His direction.“
