Is Christ Being Discriminated Against at Christmas?
It is important for all Christians to understand that the United States Supreme Court has never said that governments, schools, or private businesses must eliminate the religious aspects of a cultural holiday like Christmas. Instead, the Court has held that the Constitution requires the state to be neutral in its relations with both religious believers and non-believers. Furthermore, the Constitution does not require the government to oppose religion or religious expression or to become hostile toward religion. Finally, courts affirmatively require that religion be accommodated, not merely tolerated, in the public square, and certainly not discriminated against or handicapped.
Are Legal Grinches Trying to Steal Christ from Your Christmas?
In recent years, there has been a misguided effort on the part of some anti-religious groups in our society to ban symbols of Christmas in all public places, and in facilities that receive support from government money. This misguided and unnecessary effort is advanced primarily by rumor and threats; however, we firmly believe that there is not a constitutional Establishment Clause problem with continuing to celebrate Christmas in public facilities in America.
Is the Celebration of Christmas Banned from the Public School?
Some communities and public schools have unnecessarily stopped all mention of Christmas and now celebrate a completely secular “Winter Holiday”. This is a sad and gross misunderstanding of separation of church and state. Generally, public schools have more latitude to celebrate Christmas than they realize. Parents and students should always be respectful, but should not be intimidated by school officials who may themselves be unaware of the laws that control the celebration of Christmas in public school.
