Defending the Declaration

Defending the Declaration: How the Bible and Christianity Influenced the Writing of the Declaration of Independence

by Gary Amos

After ten years of research and four years of writing, Dr. Gary Amos reveals that the evidence from primary sources is irrefutable: underlying the Declaration of Independence is a foundation of Biblical principles and Christian influence. The Bible and Christianity—not deism and secularism—were the most important influences on the framers. Amos laments that America's educational system denies or ignores almost all of this evidence; evidence he believes to be undeniable.

Faith in God & Generals

Faith in God and Generals: An Anthology of Faith, Hope, and Love in the American Civil War

by Ted Baehr (Author, Editor), Susan Wales (Editor)

What with a foreword by Ron Maxwell, director of the new movie Gods and Generals, it is easy to grasp that this book is a companion to the film, and doubtless seeing the movie and reading Jeff Shaara's novel Gods and Generals (1996) will enrich appreciation of editors Baehr and Wales' compilation. Still, the copiously illustrated book is independently useful as attestation of the importance of religion in the life of the general society that fought the Civil War and in the lives of many figures prominent in it. Stonewall Jackson is the predominant figure here, because of the novel and film but also because his faith had a burning intensity that daunted even some of his contemporaries. Robert E. Lee, who worshiped duty as much as anything else, is also prominent, as is Abraham Lincoln, a self-construed nonsectarian Christian. Less inevitable figures include William Rosecrans, whose reputation may suffer now as it did then from his devout Catholicism, and George McClellan, who isn't usually considered to have worshiped anything other than himself. Roland Green

Old-Time Revivals

by John Shearer

The Hand of God moving in great revivals have always brought great change to the lives of men. From "The Puritan Fire" to the "Aberdeenshire Revival" this book chronicles some of the notable--as well as lesser-known--revivals of the seventeenth through nineteenth centuries. Learn of the Puritans in England, who found strength and new life in the Word of God--of one of their pastors, Richard Baxter, who invited every member of his congregation to his house, where he earnestly sought their faith in Christ. Read of the Great Awakening, where such men as John Wesley and George Whitefield preached to crowds of people in England and America, and of David Brainerd's missionary work with the American Indians. Read also of the Great Missionary Revival, the American Awakening, the Ulster Revival of 1859 and more. Illustrated.

Excerpt from book:
"The work is abidingly associated with the name of William M'Culloch, minister of the Parish Church. He was not at all a 'popular' preacher. His delivery was slow and cautious, but his message was intensely Biblical. He rose at five that he might revel in the riches of Divine Truth. He abounded in charity, but, above all, he was a man of prayer. He loved the secret place, and he was ever encouraging his people to unite in praying bands, and to make the chief burden of their petitions the revival of God's work."

The American Dream: Jamestown and the Planting of the American Christian Republic

The American Dream: Jamestown and the Planting of the American Christian Republic

by Stephen McDowell and Mark Beliles

America is a unique nation in history. No nation has been as free, prosperous, charitable, and virtuous. This has nothing to do with any inherent value of the American people, but has to do with the valuable ideas upon which she was founded. Seven foundational ideas are examined that produced the American Dream, all of which are Biblical in their origin and were planted by the early settlers.

The first seed principles were planted in Jamestown 400 years ago. Though often ignored, Christianity was vital for the beginning of Virginia; God's hand was evident in preserving the colony and in the lives of many of its founders. The American Dream looks at Rev. Richard Hakluyt, the man most influential in English colonization in the new world, and his motive "to inlarge the glory of the gospell." It documents the important role of the Christian faith in the founding of Virginia, and shows how the colonists' desire to propagate the Christian religion, as recorded in the First Charter of Virginia (1606), was fulfilled in Pocahontas and other native Americans. The ideas that made America exceptional were planted and grew in all the colonies, producing much fruit in the early American republic. Today, however, these ideas are under attack and are being displaced by secular ideas. For the American Dream to continue, we must remember from where we came and return the nation to its original Godly covenant.

The Original 13

The Original 13

by William J. Federer

A Documentary History of Religion in America's Original Thirteen States - "The whole power over the subject of religion is left exclusively to the State governments, to be acted upon according to their sense of justice and the State Constitutions," wrote Supreme Court Justice Joseph Story in his Commentaries on the Constitution of the United States, 1833. Who was Joseph Story? He was the founder of Harvard Law School and appointed to the Supreme Court by President James Madison - the same James Madison who introduced the First Amendment in the first session of Congress. To understand the progression of religious freedom in America, it is necessary to review the Constitutions of the original thirteen States, together with the Colonial Charters that preceded them. Examining Charters, Constitutions, Court Decisions and Correspondence, this overview of history is intended as a study help for those interested in discovering the role religion played in America's original thirteen States. The process of how the Federal Courts used the 14th Amendment to remove religion from States' jurisdiction, most notably in the 1947 Everson v. Board of Education case, and subsequently evolved it into its present interpretation, is the subject of another book.

America, a Christian Nation? Examining the Evidence of the Christian Foundation of America

America, a Christian Nation? Examining the Evidence of the Christian Foundation of America

by Stephen McDowell

Many people today claim that America is not now nor ever has been a Christian nation. Yet, the Founders of America spoke of her as a Christian nation many times. They recognized America, not as an ecclesiastical state where the church ruled nor one without sin, but as a nation founded on Biblical principles, where Biblical truth and law were the standard for public life, law, and societal institutions. This book examines the broad evidence of the Christian foundation of America; and also addresses the claim that America is now pluralistic and thus Christianity must be treated like all other beliefs, concluding, as did America's Founders, that Christianity is the source of liberty, and if its principles are ignored, no freedom and permanent happiness are possible.
